Illini lose first game to pesky Maryland

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

I honestly expected the Illini to get blown out and that looked to be the case early in the game. However, the orange crush helped the Illini battle back in the second half to take the lead for a short time. Down 3 late in the game, the Illini made a defensive stand but then Maryland stole the ball and scored. That pretty much sealed it for Maryland. I was surprised that Weber didn’t put Jamar Smith in the game to provide a spark. He was pretty non-existent when he did play, so maybe that’s why he didn’t see much time late in the game. I shutter to think how tough playing Arizona will be in a few days. I guess I’m still spoiled by our magical run from a few years ago. Reality check time Stan, the Illini are rebuilding. :-)

Bears fall short on turnover filled game

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

I guess when the #1 and #2 defenses in the NFL clash, turnovers are bound to occur. Unfortunately for the Bears, it was the final interception from Grossman that sealed the win for the Patriots. One thing I noticed is that the Patriots have one heck of an offensive line. Brady never got sacked and I believe he was only hit twice. (Grossman wasn’t that fortunate) I’m not making any excuses here for the Bears, but that lovely new field that New England installed looked like crap. I think a lot of the guys on both sides were losing their footing. I definitely blame Urlacher’s missed tackle on Brady on the field because he would never miss a wide open tackle like that. So the Bears drop to 9-2 on the season and hopefully can bounce back next week against the Vikings. I can hear some fans already wondering if we shouldn’t bring Griese into the game, but I don’t think we’re quite there yet. One positive in the game was the strong running game by Cedric Benson. He ran over a few guys in the 1st half, so that was promising. New England right now looks like they could definitely make and win the superbowl. Hopefully the Bears will be there in a few months to change that fate. :-)

Bears comeback in the 2nd half to beat the Giants!

Sunday, November 12th, 2006

The beginning of the game started like the last one ended. I’m sure Bears fans around the country were going ‘oh no, here we go again’. The running game was non-existant and the passing game was not working either. We managed to squeak in a late 1st half touchdown to make it a 13-10 Giants lead at halftime. The Bears then went on to outscore the Giants 25-10 in the 2nd half. I glanced up at the TV at one point to see Hester catch a missed field goal in the endzone. He started walking like he was going to take a knee, but then took off running. 108 yards later, he was in the other endzone with a touchdown. It comes almost one year to the day when Nathan Vasher returned a 108 yard field goal miss for a touchdown against the 49ers. Unbelievable!!! What a great 2nd half for the Bears, very glad to see them hang in there. 8-1, not too shabby!

My first geocaching adventure!

Sunday, November 12th, 2006

I’ve been following the geocaching stuff for several years now, but have yet to go out and find a cache. (I have helped a coworker hide a cache though) At the beginning of the year, I purchased a bluetooth GPS for my Pocket PC along with a nifty geocaching program called BeeLineGPS. I was hoping to do some caching this spring or summer, but just never got around to it. In August I purchased a bicycle and decided I had to have a GPS for it, so I picked up a Garmin GPS60CSx. I could have gone the basic eTrex or other low-end GPS, but I really liked the features of the 60CSx. (the $50 rebate helped a tad too!) My vision was to actually ride the bike to local parks in the area and do a little geocaching, yet that never materialized.

So I had decided this morning that I was going to hit a local park to take some pictures of the pretty trees and leaves. Unfortunately I didn’t realize that they’d all blown away, so that kinda shot that idea down. Before I departed home, I had loaded up some area geocaches into the pocket pc and my GPS. I pulled up one out in the country (GCXFG7) and decided to go after it and see what happened. I parked the car and read the clue on the pocket pc and then went treking with the GPS60csx. About 5 minutes later I discovered this coffee can cache and opened it up. I didn’t have anything with me to leave nor did I have a pen, but luckily the log book inside had a pen attached to it so I was able to sign the log. I carefully repacked everything and sealed the coffee can back up, then took a moment to rejoice as I found my first geocache! I went back to the car and marked the cache as found and wrote a little note to remind myself to log it when I got back home.

I looked on the GPS and noticed another cache (GCGY51) about a mile up the road. Why not go after it while I’m here? I drove towards it and then parked where it told me to and got out looking for the cache. This one would prove much more difficult to find given the terrain of trees and thorny things. The clue stated that there was supposed to be a path to follow to get to the cache, but there was no path that I could find. I battled my way through the trees, twigs, and small hills. (some slightly muddy too) I kept glancing at the GPS and noticed I was getting closer, but I was really having issues with the terrain. What was left of the thorn branches kept grabbing my jacket and pants in some attempt to ‘protect’ the cache! ;) I battled on and shortly after saw the little tupperware container next to a tree. Hurray!!! :P Once again, TNLNSL. :) However I guess you could say I took home a few battle-wounds and thorns embedded in my pants.

So I have to say it was a great morning and I really enjoyed finding the 2 caches. I definitely would prefer caches like the ones I found out in the country rather than have to battle a local urban park. I felt like a kid on Christmas when finding the caches, it was very cool. It was nice to get some use out of my techy gadgets too. :) I took a few pictures while I was out there and hope to post them on here later on. (is it ok to post pictures of the cache and it’s location?) I just went ahead and signed up for a 1 year subscription, so now I’ll be able to enjoy geocaching even further. :) (I had signed up awhile back for a monthly subscription, but I’d rather just do a year so I don’t have to set aside $3/mo!)

Thanks to all for your wonderful stories which inspired me to get off my duff and go enjoy this wonderful hobby.

Dolphins shock the Bears at Chicago

Monday, November 6th, 2006

Well this is not how I wanted to see the Bears go down in their first loss of the year. I don’t know if they just got outplayed or if they were looking ahead to next week’s matchup with the Giants. It had many shades of the Arizona game, but even being at home they couldn’t overcome the deficit. There really isn’t a good loss, but maybe this is what the Bears need to better prepare for a deep run in the playoffs. Rex looked like crap again and was forcing way too many plays. The Dolphins defense deserves a lot of credit for bringing it to the Bears. Hopefully the Bears can regroup for Sunday night’s primetime game against the Giants.
